Self Defence

We know how the religious teachers
and others have said that we should be desireless,
cultivate detachment,
be free from desire —  which is really absurd,
because desire has to be understood,
not destroyed.

If you destroy desire, you may destroy life itself.
If you pervert desire, shape it, control it, dominate it, suppress it, you may be destroying something extraordinarily beautiful.

(Krishnamurti)

What has sex got to do with tai chi?

If you think that tai chi is just an exercise routine, then it is probably difficult to see any relationship between tai chi and sex.
Tai chi is about balancing all aspects of your being and sex is an important part of healthy living.

Taoist sages were interested in longevity and virility, in feeling good as they grew older; they saw sex as a means of finding out who you are and what you want.

Having a positive attitude about sex is important.
Tai chi improves your self-esteem and confidence; both mentally and physically.
You are free to find out what works for you.

The honesty of taoism and tai chi allows people to be open with their partners without fear of disapproval.

Personal tension

Every part of life must be attended to; sex is as important as eating, drinking and sleeping.
A loving healthy relationship can provide the means within which this primal need can be enjoyed.
In modern life we are encouraged to hurry, meet deadlines, and do more in less time.
This means that there is the tendency to neglect what the body wants.

Eating habits become poor, sleep suffers and sex is not addressed.
Daily life involves a lot of confrontation and adverse emotion, and these experiences are stored in the body in the form of physical tension.
The neck, shoulder and spine frequently become inflexible as tension builds.
Tai chi aims to release these held tensions and allow the body to open and relax.

Sex drive is affected when people feel stiff and stressed.
The tai chi routine encourages you to slow down and listen to what your body and mind really want to do.
By relaxing into sex and allowing yourself the freedom to explore - you forget your worries - and tension dissipates.
Embracing your natural healthy passions is part of being a creative human being.

Energy release

Being able to release stored energy is an important part of tai chi.

Consider sneezing... When you sneeze, it is unselfconscious. You simply do it. There is no anxiety.
No preparation. It just happens. You have no choice but to go with it. Releasing stored energy is the same.

Your body has knotted areas of tension which restrict mobility and make you feel physically uncomfortable.

When you relax mentally, you feel safe and can let go.

Sex is an excellent way to do this.

Performance problems in sex are usually due to the inability to relax and be yourself.

Ignoring your needs

Taoism is concerned with life and sex is an important part of living.
Sex is sex.
There is nothing dirty or unwholesome about it.

Many cultures still suffer from an embarrassment regarding sex and this helps nobody to be healthy.

Our bodies are naturally inclined to desire sexual contact and we should nurture this need rather than feel awkward about it.
People are attracted to one another in so many different ways and this is healthy.
It is only when this process ceases to occur that we should worry.
