Self Defence

Some rules do not have to be obeyed – but it is useful to keep them in mind.

(Edward De Bono)

The law

It is necessary to avoid prosecution when using self defence.
This can be assisted by employing restraint and only applying
tai chi when you have no other choice.
You should never use your skills in
anger.

Laws exist to ensure the safety and wellbeing of society, and a martial artist should respect this.

The Police

If you are ever required to defend yourself in a public place and the Police arrive, submit immediately to the authority of the Police.
Do not offer any resistance, and make sure that your conduct and bearing remains polite and respectful.

The Police perform an unpleasant duty in our society. Be careful not to make their job any harder than it already is.

Should you ever see a Police officer being assaulted/in trouble, endeavour to assist them if you can.

One rule

There is only one true rule in self defence:

Never underestimate the opponent.

 (Sun Tzu)

To do so would be your biggest and perhaps only mistake - an attackers capabilities cannot be discerned from appearance alone.

Under the right circumstances, anybody can defeat anybody else. Can you see an attacker who approaches from behind?

Code of conduct

Our class observes a clearly defined
code of conduct. This exists for everyone's safety.

Anyone who chooses not to follow its guidelines may be asked to leave the class permanently.
