Equipment

Self defence students who reach the intermediate level of training will need to consider purchasing some additional training equipment.

  2. Small/escrima stick

  3. Rubber knife

They assist with fa jing development.

The basic equipment is required irrespective of whether the student plans to learn weapons forms or not.

Optional:

  1. 3-tier wallbag

  2. Open finger bag gloves

  3. Floor-to-ceiling ball

  4. Heavy bag

Short staff

A bamboo staff is required for partner exercises.

Small stick

An escrima stick is ideal for loosening the wrists and learning how to deliver fa jing through the wood.

Rubber knife

A safe training tool for defence against a knife and to develop small circle waist turns.

3-tier wallbag

A 3-tier wallbag is a canvas bag filled with dried peas.
It trains a person to punch with substance.
If the body is not loose and connected, the weak areas can be felt immediately.
If the punch is delivered with too much force, there is adverse feedback.
It is advisable to use open finger bag gloves with the 3-tier wallbag to avoid chafing the knuckles.

Open finger bag gloves

These protect the knuckles.

Floor-to-ceiling ball

This is a ball secured to floor and ceiling with elastic.
It can be used for developing the expression of force in four directions and practising slapping and certain types of punch.
It is advisable to use open finger bag gloves with the floor-to-ceiling ball to avoid chafing the knuckles.

Heavy bag

A bracket is secured to the wall and the bag hangs by a chain attached to the bracket.
It is ideal for pushing peng training and stick work.

Suppliers

A variety of suppliers sell this equipment.

Other purchases

It is customary for martial arts classes to have a dress code and ours is no exception.

All students are expected to be wearing a class T-shirt and kung fu trousers by the time they reach beginners syllabus part 2.
