Yesterday I walked along Briones Crest. Looking east towards the central
valley I saw a layer, an inversion cloud of pollution so thick I could not
see the base of Mount Diablo. The difference between the brownish murk
separated by a clean line to the bright blue was striking. I was with a
friend who remarked that if an aborigine to this land could have beheld such
a sight he would have seen it as a blight against the land, a calamity,
something evil to be warded off. What can a martial artist do? Become active
in politics, campaigning, lobbying, writing to congress people? The
government seems to protect the right of big business to pollute and
restricts research into soft technology and alternatives to oil. Earth
first!? Approach the battlefield with a wrench, protecting trees by sleeping
in them?
There seems to be a last great battle before us, so I wonder at the apathy
and helplessness that marks the times. What to do? As things worsen I think
that in a few years we will have no choice but to choose a side. Feel it!
Feel it!

Your home
You spend much of your free time at home. It is important to consider whether or not your living environment is natural.

Space, light, greenery and air can make your home pleasant.
The careful use of colour and the
placement of objects can affect the
ambiance.
Natural materials and fabrics feel good to touch and serve to remind us of
the organic world.
A healthy home can help you to remember your relationship
with the rest of nature.
Fresh air
Going outside is essential.
It is a vital source of exercise and air.
In modern society there is a tendency to spend much of our days inside.
This is unhealthy and can lead to a variety of problems.
We all need to go outside for a walk every day.
It is natural.
Tai chi is best performed outside, where you can breathe easily
and feel the sun or the rain on your skin.
Our world
If you feel that you are part of the world, then your relationship with it
will change.
You will not feel alienated.
There is a place for everyone and everything in the world - it is large
enough and bountiful enough for us all.
It just takes a little consideration.
